What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small, swollen and raised blood vessels that visibly twist and turn along the surface of the skin. They typically run along your legs and face. Spider veins are less severe than varicose veins, and usually don’t pose a health risk. Mainly, spider veins only cause problems aesthetically, as they interrupt the appearance of a smooth, even skin tone that many people strive for.

Spider veins are caused by a number of factors. Genetics, hormones and certain medications like birth control can predispose a person to spider veins. Extreme weight gain and an occupation that involves a lot of standing (nursing, teaching, hairstyling) can also bring on the appearance of spider veins. Sometimes, the appearance of spider veins is out of our control, but the ability to receive a removal treatment is completely within our grasp.

What is Spider Vein Removal?

Spider vein removal is a treatment that uses a laser, similar to laser hair removal. The small veins near the surface of the skin attract the laser's heat energy. As a result, the vein absorbs the heat, the blood inside it coagulates and closes, and it is naturally absorbed into the body.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Usually, patients require 4-6 treatments for optimal results. Most treatments are fairly quick and only take 30 minutes to complete. If the vein is much larger than a typical vein, the treatment might take up to one hour.

Am I a Candidate for Spider Vein Removal?

Most clients tolerate this treatment very well. For patients with diabetes, poor circulation, are on a blood thinner or have a history of poor healing, this treatment might not be right for you. Above all, consult our team to make sure you are the right candidate for spider vein removal.

How Can I Prepare for the Treatment?

To get ready for your spider vein removal treatment, there are a few things you can do to prepare your skin. Firstly, four days prior to treatment, stay out of the sun. At the very least, protect the area to be treated from sun exposure. Secondly, don’t use tanning creams or spray tans; these will affect your skin’s pigmentation and reduce the treatment’s effectiveness. Lastly, avoid any medication or topical anesthetic that may constrict blood vessels.

Should you expose the treatment area to sun, use skin pigmentation creams or use any medication that may affect treatment, we suggest rescheduling your spider vein removal.

Are There Any Side Effects of Spider Vein Removal?

Sometimes, clients may feel a slight discomfort during or immediately after the treatment. Apply an ice pack or a cold gel pack to soothe the area. After the treatment, your leg veins may appear swollen or bruised, but this will fade with time. Of course, contact our team if you have any concerns, discomfort or blistering.
